For the most part, when I get my makeup done for a photoshoot, I am obsessed with my look after. But that isn’t always the case. Sometimes you walk out of hair and makeup and are horrified.
How to fix this; take matters into your own hands.
I always go to set with my own makeup kit, in case they don’t like to use their own mascara or don’t have the right shade of foundation for your skin. Whatever the possible reason, I always come prepared.
Usually, I only have to use it for touch-ups. Sometimes, I have to do mini overhauls in the bathroom.
Some makeup artists and creative directors reading this will be horrified, bear with me.
*Don’t make stylistic choices or change the direction of the look. If you don’t like their creative direction, say they paint out your eyebrows so they look shaved, do NOT fix it. This is their vision and this is what the client wants. Sure, you don’t look like you do in sexy-hot-af-glam. It’s ok, the pictures will come out cool. High fashion is weird, just go with it.*
When it is okay to fix things, is when you know something else looks better on your face. I know my angles at this point. I have been modeling my entire life. I know when my cheek contour looks good. I know that my nose looks weird contoured in photos. And sometimes makeup artists don’t achieve that look that you know is good for your face.
If you need to tweak the contour and add a hint of blush, that’s okay. Or even ask the makeup artist to do it for you and say you think that a smidge of x,y,z will look better on you in photos. It’s okay to speak up. Makeup artists shouldn’t get offended. They’re there to make you look your best, and they might not know how to glam you.
I was doing a big campaign for Splat Hair Dye (photos in full pink wig below) and I had to seriously tweak my makeup. The MUA had done weird contouring on my face and nose and completely changed my face structure and vibe, and not for the better. I had her change a bit, but eventually just took things into my own hands and tweaked it ever so slightly.
Never make major changes to your look, you might get in trouble. But if you know your eyes look good with a touch of eyeliner in the outer corner or your cheeks look better with a hint of pink, its okay to make some tiny touch-ups.
